Why the Wrong Type of Underwear Could Cause Vaginal Yeast Infections

Could the way you dress, including the type of underwear you don, be a factor in whether or not you develop a yeast infection?

Are certain fabrics more apt to create a friendlier environment for vaginal yeast infections than others? According to experts, the answer to both of these questions is Yes.

Certain types of clothing and fabrics, including certain types of underwear and swimsuits, can be very detrimental, creating the perfect environment for the overgrowth of yeast which is ultimately what causes a vaginal yeast infection.

In this article we will explain the relationship between clothing, underwear and vaginal yeast infections, and outline some of the important do’s and don’ts on what to wear to prevent these nasty infections.

Vaginal Yeast Infections and the Wrong Type of Underwear/Clothing

If you’ve ever had a yeast infection you are already well aware of how uncomfortable the condition can be. From the itching to the burning to the vaginal discharge, vaginal yeast infections have the ability to wreak temporarily havoc on your life.

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida, and this type of fungus thrives in areas such as the vagina. But what do clothes and underwear have to do with all of this?

According to a prevalent gynecologist and researcher at New York University, “the wrong type of clothing can produce additional warmth and moisture in the vaginal area, therefore changing its natural environment. This additional warmth and moisture sets up the perfect conditions for the growth of yeast organisms, including the fungus Candida which absolutely thrives in these conditions.”

This researcher goes on to say that the wrong type of clothing can worsen vaginal itch, and will not only prolong an existing vaginal yeast infection, but may in fact cause one to develop.

The good news, though, is that while you may not be able to change all the factors that can potentially lead to vaginal yeast infections, you can change the way you dress.

Vaginal Yeast Infections and Underwear Materials

Naturally, underwear is the most crucial piece of clothing with regard to vaginal yeast infections, as it is the piece of clothing with the nearest proximity to the vagina. Because of this, there are certain fabrics you should avoid altogether when purchasing underwear – fabrics that can create additional moisture and warmth and invite yeast growth.

These fabrics include :

So what type of underwear should you wear to avoid developing a vaginal yeast infection?

The answer is cotton.

According to medical experts, cotton is a very breathable fabric with a remarkable tendency to pull moisture away from the skin. This keeps the vaginal area cool and dry and thus discourages the overgrowth of yeast and fungus.

Pantyhose and leggings are other items that should either be limited or eliminated from your wardrobe altogether. Pantyhose are made from nylon – a hot, synthetic fabric and can cause excess warmth and moisture in the vaginal area. If you absolutely have to wear pantyhose on occasion, make sure you wear cotton panties underneath, and try to select only those pantyhose with a cotton crotch.

Many women these days like to wear clothing that is tight or hugs the body, especially when they jog or workout, but this too can lead to excessive heat and excess moisture. Most of the experts suggest that you resist wearing items such as spandex, leotards or even tight-fitting jeans, and opt instead for cotton garments, worn loosely to help keep the vaginal area from becoming too warm.

What you wear, especially the underwear you opt for can have an enormous effect on the number of yeast infections you develop.

Choose wisely when you dress and you may be able to eliminate the problem altogether.
